Network Security Lab
The Digital Forensics Network Security Lab will function as our security training facility. The lab will accommodate training in data and network security as well as cyber security intrusion detection, prevention and tracing. The lab will be divided into 3 fully functioning "real-world" networks, each with four workstations. Each of these networks will have a server, firewall, routing and switching capabilities as well as wireless access. All networking hardware used in the lab will be high-end equipment including routers, switches, firewalls and wireless access points. The lab and department will also utilize a blade server consisting of 20 dual processor blade machines in one rack mountable enclosure. Software used in the lab will include network analysis tools used to localize network problems, perform sophisticated diagnostic tests, monitor network traffic and events, trace illicit network activities and test and debug network hardware and software. The lab will be used in the training of regional law enforcement agencies and investigative agencies through twelve, two-day on-site training sessions.
Data Recovery Lab
The Digital Forensics Data Recovery Lab will function as our data recovery training facility. The lab will provide training in the identification, recovery, and preservation of data for legal purposes. The facility will include desktop and laptop equipment for 12 trainees, together with data recovery hardware and software. Data recovery hardware will include two class 100 clean-flow benches, hard drive re-programming equipment and tools to manage hard disk head crashes, hard drive spindle lock-ups, bad hard drive circuit boards, tracks, and firmware as well as RAID data loss. Two physical benches will be provided to accommodate the hardware. Peripheral devices including PDA's, and flash memory modules will be used in training sessions. A laptop re-charging station will also be purchased to facilitate efficient storage and re-charging of laptop computers.
Web Server
In addition, A Web Sever will be used for the Digital Forensics Department as a portal to our department. The web server will serve our web site and it will be used to manage a digital library of relevant Digital Forensics publications. This library will be full-text searchable and it will be continuously updated. The web site will be used to publicize events, news, pertinent information regarding the Data Recovery and Network Security Labs, and information on Faculty and Staff.
